Before the correct coating system could be specified, Tor Coatings carried out a comprehensive free survey of the site to ensure every aspect of the project was clearly understood and all defects were documented thoroughly.
The seamless Elastaseal Z coating system was specified for Temperate House. Around 35% of the guttering had to be taken from the site to a shot blasting facility, where existing layers of paint were removed to leave a bare metal surface before the system could be applied. Based on a high solids formula, with built-in fibreglass reinforcement, Elastaseal Z delivers incredible tensile strength and resistance to water. It includes proprietary components, to encapsulate bolt heads and bridge joints, that ensure a seamless waterproof finish.
The project was carried out by FMJ with site support from the Tor sales and technical service team. The Temperate House was closed to the public for a five-year refurbishment, during which time it was shrouded in an enormous protective tent large enough to cover three Boeing 747 planes.
In addition to the comfort of having a 25 year BBA accreditation, the project is covered by Tor’s comprehensive 25-year single point warranty. During this period, we will carry out regular scheduled inspections to ensure that the performance is delivered for the client. The Temperate House was re-opened by the famous English broadcaster and naturalist Sir David Attenborough on May 3rd 2018. Tor Coatings were awarded Liquid Roofing Project of the Year over 1000m2 at the LWRA Awards 2018 in recognition of the work on Temperate House.
